The designing of Aerostar aircraft had began in 1964 by Ted Smith. Today Piper Aerostar is a light or executive aircraft designed by Ted R. Smith. The aircraft was originally manufactured by Ted Smith Aircraft Company and later became part of Piper Aircraft Corporation.
Ted Smith took the first Aerostar 600 in air in October 1967. The Aerostar 600 was an aircraft with mid wing cantilever monoplane and was powered by two Avco Lycoming piston engines mounted on wings. The place had tricycle landing gear, cab with luxury features that accommodated six passengers. The Aero 600 than got its turbocharged version known as Aerostar 601.
The Aerostar aircraft was manufactured at Van Nuys California in 1968 when the company was taken over by American Cement Company. The company then in 1969 was sold to Butler Aviation.
